What to Expect

The Initial Consultation & Your Intellectual Property

The Initial Consultation & Your Intellectual Property

Our initial consultation is an opportunity to meet you and discuss your invention and ideas as well as you as goals for your business and how intellectual property protections can be used to protect your ideas and to leverage those ideas.

What should I bring?

What should I bring?

Our goal is to gather as much information about your matter as possible. Therefore, you should bring any relevant documents, prototypes, photos and/or drawings. However if all you have is an idea in your head, then the idea is all you need to bring.

What will we discuss?

What will we discuss?

We look at each new client through a wide lens from beginning to end. From starting a new venture to ongoing operations, we want to identify and protect your intellectual property while creating a plan of action that fits in your needs and budget.

Our Fee Structure

Initial Consultation

We charge a small consultation fee for our first conference, which is applied to future work if you decide to proceed.

Flat Fees

We work mainly on a flat fee basis. Therefore, you know what you will be charged for the work prior to proceeding.

How are fees determined?

Each flat fee is determined based on a number of factors. Therefore, fees cannot simply be quoted over the phone without first having an initial consultation. We will work with you to create a plan of action that fits in your needs and budget. We base our fees on the American Intellectual Property Law Associations most recent economic surveys. Therefore, our fees are in line and often less than the averages set forth in those survey results.

Why do we charge for an initial consultation?

We would be happy to answer general questions with every potential client. However, questions regarding patent, trademark and copyright law quickly move into providing substantive legal advice.

Providing substantive legal advice to ensure a client makes informed decisions requires time, knowledge and occasional research.

You should be serious about your business and you want an attorney who is going to be honest and objective about your legal matters. The majority of experienced patent attorneys charge for their time and their advice.

In contrast, many free consultations are not even handled by a patent attorney but rather a sales representative. A free consultation is in many cases nothing more than a high pressured sales pitch attempting to push services on you that you may not even need.

All of our work is handled "in-house" and we never farm any searches or legal work out to subcontractors. We believe this creates a better work product, especially with regard to the thoroughness of our patent searches and trademark searches. In addition, keeping all searches and legal work "in-house" greatly reduces the chance of your invention and/or trade secrets ending up in the hands of a third-party.
